Today’s Debate: Small tattoos vs. big tattoos

Small tattoos vs. big tattoos…That is the question!

Tattoos have become a huge part of pop culture today throughout the world.  Although they simply started as a way for humans and ancient civilizations to pay homage to their gods and nature, today they are used to create a fashion statement among youth and older generations.  Bikers the most common stereotype for tattoos next to rock stars, like the power and strength a tattoo displays along with its demonstration that they are not afraid of pain.  Rockers like tattoos because it gives them a harder edge and acts as an outlet besides their music’s on which they can express themselves and their feelings, allowing them the ability to literally wear their emotions on their sleeves.  And for most young adults, tattoos are a symbol of status and a beauty statement, treated as little as the purchase of a necklace.

One of these may you reason or you may be choosing to honoring the memory of a lost loved one or many more reasons, but regardless, when choosing to get a tattoo you are going to end up with the same base decision to make, getting a small tattoo versus a big tattoo. One thing that may decide what size of a tattoo you are going to get is where you decide to place it.  Obviously the back is a larger canvas than an appendage, but you will have to decide what your present career, or present career is going to be, and how visible you want your tattoo to be.  Some people, particularly girls like the idea of small tattoos because they can be covered up more easily and are not as noticeable to future employers or people with a general negative opinion of people with tattoos.

Guys who want to go into serious careers such as lawyers or politics may also decide they want tattoos in less obvious places, thus making them easier to hide.  However, because of the nature of your skin and since tattoos will begin to bleed some as you age, you may want to consider getting a larger tattoo if your design is intricate or contains lettering.  While the idea of letters may work out small for now, in twenty years due to your shins shedding, it will become mashed together and in descript if you choose to make the letters too small.  In the same manner, if you choose to get a design of replica of a painting or other artwork tattooed on you, you will have to have it done in a larger format in order to preserve its distinctiveness and clarity on your back.

An added piece of advice, don’t rely on just any tattoo artist to tell you if this will be the case with your design or not.  Like any other profession in the world, tattoo artists can be engaging trustworthy people, or just the opposite.  Many will tell you it will look fine since they know once they take the money and ink you, there’s not much you can do about it twenty years down the line.
